Josie stared into the mirror, a stark, pained look on her face. Her eyes met D.J.'s in the reflection. "I can't talk about my life."
"Why not? What kind of rule is that?"
"My life is over. Talking about it won't change a thing. We have to concentrate on you, not me. Besides, I can't bear to speak of it. What I lost . . . It's too painful to remember."
"See? That's exactly what I've been trying to tell you. Feelings only bring you down. What good are they?"
Josie spun toward her and grasped D.J.'s hand in surprisingly strong fingers. "They're everything. My life would have been worthless if I hadn't had . . ." Josie's voice drifted off, and she stared into D.J.'s eyes earnestly. "I want you to have what I hada love so strong and wonderful it's life to you."
D.J. yanked her fingers from the angel's grasp. "Why? What difference does it make to you how I live my life?"
Josie turned away, her hand going up to massage her forehead as though she had a headache. Did angels get headaches? "I don't know," she answered. "For some reason I care about you. Call it an angel thing. Call it insanity. But I don't want you to die like I did, lacking the one thing that could make you whole."
